“I decided to start Yoga at the studio because I have suffered with quite bad anxiety for three years and all the self-help books out there kept stating Yoga was good for anxiety sufferers. In addition, I have suffered lower back pain (sitting at a computer desk for 8/9 hours a day) since the birth of my daughter 25 years ago.
As an anxiety sufferer, starting a course and doing something on my own was terrifying for me and so out of my comfort zone. Thoughts like ‘what if I can’t do it?’ ‘what if I look stupid?’

“I was recommended to do Pilates by my wife and a physiotherapist. This was after I had compacted and damaged two discs in my lower pack. I was in a lot of pain and had restricted mobility. I do endurance swimming and was unable to participate in that sport.
The Pilates instructors have a passion for their discipline. I find the classes excellent and the instructors are willing to help you whatever your level of ability. The core basics of the exercise remains the same, but different teachers have their own slant on delivery which keeps it fresh. I learnt that Joseph Pilates who developed the exercise regime did it not only for general fitness and mobility but to help people recovery from injury.
It has made a marked difference to my mobility. It has strengthened my core muscles, protecting my back and greatly improving my flexibility. I am now back participating in other sport. “I decided to start at the studio as the venue was near to where I live and had free parking. Also when I contacted you for a free trial you came back to me really quickly. You were also really friendly and positive.
I had a few worries about starting classes as previously I’d had really bad back problems. This resulted in Sciatica (so painful) through not having any fluid in a couple of discs in my lower back. Although I was attending Pilates classes at another venue I wondered if Yoga would be too much for my back. However I spoke to Paula who put me at ease and I soon realised that there were others who also have similar issues.
The best thing about doing yoga classes is not having back pain. Since doing the classes I’ve noticed that my whole body feels much better, more flexible even after a few months. It’s really toned my hips and bottom in fact I’ve gone down a dress size which makes you feel better about yourself.
It’s hard sometimes but Paula always reminds you to come out of the moves when its right for you and always reassures you. It’s definitely paid dividends I feel so much better in myself physically and emotionally and I haven’t had a back pain since joining! However, I do think its key that Yoga is not something you just do every week it’s a way of life.

“I’d tried yoga for the first time very recently and felt that it was a good fit for my lifestyle and my health aims, so I was already bought into the concept. I wanted to find a class close to home that was flexible on timings and available every day of the week – to fit around my work. I found Space2Be online and opted to take the free taster class. Booking it was super easy (the booking system is brilliant, very simple to use and makes sure you never forget when you have a class).
The taster class is a great idea. I was a little apprehensive prior to joining, but Paula put me totally at ease on a call before the class. Paula led the class and despite her keeping a very close eye on me as the new joiner, she did it very subtly (so I didn’t actually feel like the new girl on the block) and was made to feel part of the group very quickly. Paula’s style works fantastically for me personally… she is clearly a subject matter expert in yoga and pilates, so knows her stuff and can always offer alternative poses or positions to ensure that everyone is catered for.
I had no worries about starting yoga other than the fact that I’ve come to it quite late in life (50 years old) and suspected I’d be a little too old, a little too inflexible and may not be able to sustain my fitness just through yoga and pilates… How wrong was I!
I’d say the best thing about doing the classes it’s the complete impact the classes have on mind, body and spirit. I have personally experienced the physical impact – I’ve found muscles I didn’t know existed and can feel them becoming stronger every day and better supporting my body; the mental impact is an added and unexpected bonus. I have a very busy life and my mind works at a juggernaut pace, but the minute I step foot in Space2Be everything starts to slow down a little. I find this time is given over solely to me, my breathing, my state of mind, my body and me nurturing all of those during the sessions. It takes some getting used to when you haven’t focused on yourself in this way for a long time… but the benefits are immense.
There are numerous benefits after attending the classes… and not only benefits felt by me, but also experienced by those closest to me and around me:
- I can feel my body getting fitter and stronger after every session
- I use this time to be kind to myself – focus on me and just me for one hour every day… without any guilt!
- My mind is starting to think differently too – accepting what it needs to accept when I can’t influence external factors, but also closing down negative thoughts before they take hold and spiral off into something that brings no quality to my life
- I can relax, genuinely relax, for the first time in a long long time… simply by stopping, connecting with my breathing and focusing on me – sometimes just for 10-20 seconds
- There is little/no chance of injuries that I used to sustain at the gym when I was there
I’m not one for advocating to others what they should do, I believe in everyone to their own… but I cannot recommend yoga and pilates enough – I’d have it on the NHS if government budgets were available. It’s something that has very quickly become an integral part of my life and I know will continue to be. “I had been told many years ago by a back specialist that I needed to do yoga to stop my back problems getting worse. “I had been having problems with my back for several years and had been told that I should try Pilates or Yoga to strengthen my core and I just kept putting it off, then finally after suffering with a herniated disc I decided that it was about time to do something as I did not want to go through that much pain again.

“I have practiced yoga on and off for several years and I really enjoy the combination of stretching toning and relaxation. It’s my time!!
